Conditions are looking great for the upcoming weekend! The level of the River is near perfect and we are expecting sunny and hot weather. Don’t let the weather forecasters ruin your plans, as they will predict a chance of rain nearly every day it is hot and humid. We will run trips every hour on the hour 9-4 Sat and 10-4 Sun. Hope to see you on the River!

Everything is shaping up for a great weekend of canoe, kayak and raft trips on the Little Miami River! We are removing the remaining obstacles (trees) in the river today and the river level is down to a excellent level.

We are finally set to open on Sunday May 29 and Monday Memorial Day with canoe, kayak and raft trips on the Little Miami River running every hour on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm. This has been one of the most unusual springs in our 28 year history with the constant rainy conditions and high water. We are hopeful that from this point on we will have more normal weather conditions. Hope to see you on the river real soon so you can experience the beauty of the Little Miami River!

Recently while scouting the river for the upcoming 2011 canoe kayak and rafting season a bald eagle was spotted on the Little Miami River. Bob Allbery, Judd Platenburg and I were paddling our 9 mile trip and saw a mature bald eagle just North of the Route 725 bridge. We are hopeful that a nest may be in the area. Bald eagles were spotted on the Lower River last year, but as far as I know this is the first sighting on the upper river.

On Sunday March 13 we took our first trip down the River to check out conditions for the upcoming 2011 season. There have been three high water events during the late winter -early spring season. These “floods” move around the numerous trees and log jams, sometimes helping with the overall free flow of the river and sometimes leaving trees blocking the river. Our main section of River from Bellbrook back to our location is in pretty good condition. We will remove the few problem areas early this week, as lower water levels combined with warmer conditions will allow us to work in the River.

While we had high water levels over the weekend (check out our facebook page for details and pics), this is normal for this time of year but we will be ready for business this spring, and look forward to seeing you on the Little Miami River.

As Always New Kayaks
In keeping with our 26 year tradition of providing only the best equipment available we have almost completed our sale of last years kayaks and have taken receipt of this years kayaks. We have 50 brand new kayaks available from Perception, Wilderness Systems and our newest manufacturer Jackson Kayak. Over 5 models are available from Perception and Wilderness and include mostly sit-in kayaks to fit most paddlers. Jackson is providing both an extremely popular sit-on top kayak and a kayak that is designed for children from 50 to 100 pounds. We also have several tandem kayaks for 2 paddlers. Please keep in mind that many rentals have 1 or maybe 2 types of kayaks that are used over and over for many seasons until they are pretty much junk. At RiversEdge we are committed to operating in a different manner. We sell all of our rental kayaks before the start of the season so that we can always have nice new kayaks for our customers. We even offer a better paddle to make the most of your experience on the river. We invite you to come out and paddle a brand new kayak!

New Paluski's
We are excited to offer the best canoes and kayaks available by any outfitter in the Midwest. Our newest addition is the Paluski canoe made in Ontario Canada. This is a the first canoe that is designed with a 3rd seat for a 3rd adult or for 1 or 2 children to ride in the middle. I have been working with Paluski owner Graham Wilkins to make minor improvements to a already great boat. RiversEdge will be the only outfitter in the Midwest to have this 3 seater on the water this season. Remember friends don’t let friends paddle those nasty old aluminum beaters. Treat yourself to the best and “paddle a Paluski”.

We have been busy clearing the river of obstacles. These are usually trees which have fallen over the winter, or have been moved by high water events. All sections have been floated multiple times at different water levels to try to remove most of the things that could cause problems. As you can see from the accompanying photos we have removed some large trees. We also trim hanging branches that would interfere with passage of canoes, kayaks or rafts. Our goal is always to create the best possible river conditions for our guests, while maintaining the natural character of a Scenic River like the Little Miami River. We invite you to check it out in person in the near future.
